PLaying with Unequally Matched Players? Try one of these…
This page describes how to adjust play for children or players with varied skill levels.
1. Tile Adjustment
Traveling S: Any time an “S” tile is drawn by an adult, it is automatically passed to the child with the lowest total score. The adult who passed the “S” should draw a replacement tile, possibly continuing to pass until they draw a letter other than “S”. All other rules remain the same.
2. Hustle Timer & Draft Adjustments
Don’t Use the Hustle Timer: Simply let players finish when they finish, yelling “DONE!” each time. All other rules remain the same.
Only Allow Weaker Players to Use the Hustle Timer: Encourage the weaker players to build quickly and turn the timer on their stronger opponents, preventing the stronger player from having enough time to build well.
Draft Assistance: Help weaker players get a workable combination of vowels and consonants in their personal supply during the starting letter draft.
3. ScorING ADJUSTMENTS
Count the Total Number of Words Made (Add a “2-Points-per-Word” Bonus): In addition to the standard scoring of words by length, young or weaker players gain 2 points for every word made in a round. This offsets point differences between weaker players and older or more experienced players, who may form fewer yet longer words in a round.
OR
Remove 7+ Letter Scoring Condition: In a standard game of Word Hustle, 7 or more letter words only score if a player has no unacceptable words on their grid that round. When playing with children or sensitive players, allow 7+ letter words to score, even if another word on the grid is unacceptable.
OR
Increased Points: Young or weaker players score 5 points for all 2 and 3-letter words. All other rules remain the same.
OR
Decreased Points: Stronger players may form 2- and 3-letter words, but should not score points for them. All other rules remain the same.
